Thermocouples are temperature sensors that consist of two dissimilar metal wires joined at one end to form a junction. When the junction is subjected to a temperature change, a voltage is generated due to the Seebeck effect, which is proportional to the temperature difference between the junctions. This voltage can be measured and used to determine the temperature at the junction. Based on the materials used, thermocouples are classified into three categories: base metal, noble metal, and refractory metal thermocouples. Base metal thermocouples include K, N, J, T, and E types, which are commonly used for a wide range of industrial applications due to their cost-effectiveness and reliability. Noble metal thermocouples, including R, S, and B types, are used in high-precision applications that require greater stability at higher temperatures. For extreme temperature conditions, refractory metal thermocouples (types C, G, and D) are employed. These are designed for very high-temperature measurement, often exceeding the capabilities of base and noble metal thermocouples. Tempsens offers a variety of thermocouples, available in MI (Mineral Insulated) and Non-MI construction, ensuring versatility for different industrial needs.
Key Points about Thermocouples:
Thermocouple elements are made from metals that have material-specific electro negativities in order to achieve the highest possible thermoelectric voltages. Thermocouples are available in both class 1 and class 2 as per IEC 60584 and some standard and special classes in accordance with ASTME230.
